Wolf Packmates Do NOT Fight Over Food!
Wolf packs bred and maintained in the wild do not fight over kills. They know when they eat, and fights only occur if the Pack is starving. The parents eat together, and then the rest of the wolves eat by age. Wolf Packs that are synthetic (created in captivity) do, however, as do Bachelor Packs*.
Wolf Packs Are Families
Wolf Packs do NOT take on stranger wolves. Ever. When a breeder dies, the pack disperses. If the mother wolf is alive, she'll seek out a new male and abandon her pups (unless they're old enough to leave on their own). However, seeing a female wolf adopt a pup usually means the mother was her daughter who mated, and the pups were taken away! Those stories talking about wolf packs taking pity and adopting that injured wolf in the foxtrap?
No. They would kill that wolf for being in their territory. Sorry.
Wolves Are Jerks To Other Packs' Pups
There was a situation in Yellowstone where a stranger pack entered the Slough Pack's territory and sniffed out their den. While the mother was gone to have a drink, the strangers moved in and drove away any visiting wolves. They stayed there until the young pup-babies were dead of starvation. Then, they left. Nobody knows why they came, why they starved the babies, or where they went.
Casanova Wolves vs. Pack Males vs. Father/Mother Wolves vs. Dispersals vs. Pack Females
Casanova Wolves; Casanova Wolves are males that wander around, humping all females in season. They tend to wander around a certain pack at a time, mating with the daughters of the pack. The pups made tend to be allowed to stay, but they are hidden until they are too old to be killed by the breeder pair.
Pack Males; Pack Males generally are under the age of 3 years old and are not sexually mature. They stay with their parents and help just like their sisters.
Breeder Females/Males; These are the so-called "Alpha" wolves. They breed and create pups for their Pack. They teach the next generation of wolves and maintain their territory. They also lead the charge when fighting with other packs (though this only occurs during pack encroachings).
Dispersals; These are mostly male wolves, though females do exist. They are wolves that either got chased out (a la the Druid Pack), or their pack died off. They wander alone in search of a mating partner. These wolves are susceptible to death by a wolf pack (yes, even their own family), or their prey if they hunt moose or elk.
Pack Females; Pack Females make up a majority of a pack, because they don't usually leave. They stay with their mothers and help care for the next generation. When a dispersal male comes along and takes a liking to a female, she can go with him - but her father may end up killing her boyfriend before they escape. Male Breeders do not tolerate their daughters being swept away by strangers.
*Bachelor Packs are not really packs, but rather they are makeshift groups of dispersal males that get together for mere survival. When a female comes around they turn on each other, and the last wolf standing gets her. They tend to shift in rank and break up incredibly easily.
